Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in Northern California was measured at 115.61 meters (379.3 ft), ranking it as the tallest known living tree in the world. Hyperion was discovered on August 25, 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. The tree has been confirmed by Stephen Sillett to stand 115.55 meters (379.1 ft) tall. The tree was found in a remote area of Redwood National and State Park and was purchased in 1978. The exact location of the tree has not been released to the public for fear that human traffic would upset it. ecosystem in which the tree lives.
